Healthy fall meal ideas are one of my favorite things about the changing season. As summer winds down and fall begins, I naturally start craving cozy soups, chili, sourdough, pumpkin, apples, and warm family meals. I also love finding simple ways to enjoy the season with my kids without making our already busy lives more complicated.

As a Catholic mom, fall is also a beautiful time to settle back into family routines, spend time outside, enjoy seasonal foods, and create simple traditions that bring our families together.

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite healthy fall meal ideas, easy fall activities, family traditions, and meal-planning tips that make this season enjoyable without requiring you to spend your entire weekend in the kitchen.

Healthy Fall Meal Ideas for the Whole Family

One of my favorite things about healthy fall meal ideas is that they don’t have to be complicated. Fall naturally lends itself to hearty, comforting foods that can be made ahead of time and enjoyed by the whole family.

After a summer filled with gardening, traveling, outdoor activities, and a less predictable schedule, I find myself wanting to spend more time making cozy meals at home.

Here are some of the healthy fall meals that we’re looking forward to this season.

Pumpkin and Apple Recipes

Pumpkin and apples are two of my favorite fall flavors. There are so many easy ways to incorporate them into family meals, breakfasts, snacks, and desserts.

Some of our favorite seasonal foods include:

I don’t usually buy pumpkin spice lattes when I’m out because many coffee-shop versions can contain quite a bit of added sugar. Instead, I like adding pumpkin spice or cinnamon to my regular coffee with heavy cream.

We also have an espresso machine, so on weekends my husband and I sometimes make homemade lattes together. It’s a simple little fall tradition that doesn’t require a trip to a coffee shop.

Cozy Soups and Chili

When the weather cools down, soups and chili become some of my favorite fall meal ideas for families.

Some of the meals we enjoy include:

One soup I make frequently is a sausage and ditalini soup with ground sausage, onions, garlic, fire-roasted tomatoes, chicken broth, spinach, heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, and ditalini pasta.

I love meals like this because they’re cozy and filling, and it’s easy to add a generous amount of vegetables.

And if your kids aren’t ready to eat the same meal you’re serving, don’t feel like you have to make dinner complicated.

Sometimes I’ll set aside some of the cooked ground meat and serve it separately with vegetables and fruit. We’re working toward getting everyone to enjoy the same meals, but feeding a family is a process.

Easy Fall Meal Planning for Busy Moms

The best healthy fall meal ideas are the ones that actually fit your life.

As busy moms, we don’t necessarily need more complicated recipes. We need meals that make sense for our schedules.

That’s especially true on days when our families have activities, church, sports, homeschool, work, or other commitments.

A little preparation ahead of time can make a huge difference.

You might:

The goal isn’t to spend your entire weekend meal prepping.

The goal is to make healthy family meals easier to put on the table when life gets busy.

Sourdough Recipes for Fall

Fall is also when I naturally start making more sourdough.

During the summer, I spend more time gardening and enjoying outdoor activities. Once fall arrives, I find myself wanting to bake again.

Some of my favorite sourdough recipes include:

One family tradition I’d love to establish is homemade sourdough pizza every Friday night.

Pizza is an easy sell with kids, and it’s also convenient for busy family life. The dough can be prepared earlier in the day, and the pizzas can be assembled before heading out for an evening activity.

You can find the sourdough pizza dough recipe from Farmhouse on Boone that I mentioned in the podcast.

I also love their sourdough cinnamon roll recipe for a special weekend breakfast.

These are good examples of easy fall meals and treats that can become part of a family’s seasonal traditions.

Healthy Fall Meals for Football Sundays

We’re a football family, and fall wouldn’t feel quite the same without football.

But football Sundays can also create a lot of extra work if you’re trying to cook, clean, take care of kids, and watch the game at the same time.

One thing that completely changed our Sundays was realizing that we could record the game and watch it a little later.

Instead of rushing home from Mass, making brunch, getting everyone settled, and trying to be ready for the game at exactly 1 p.m., we can take our time.

We can have brunch, get the kitchen under control, put the little ones down for naps, make coffee, and then sit down to enjoy the game.

We can also fast-forward through the commercials.

That little change made football Sundays much more enjoyable for our family.

Easy Football Sunday Meal Ideas

If you have a busy football Sunday, some healthy fall meal ideas that work well include:

The same principle applies whether your family watches football or not.

Think about the times during your week when you’d like more of your attention available for your family.

Then ask yourself:

What can I prepare ahead of time to make that possible?

Fall Family Activities for Busy Catholic Moms

Of course, fall isn’t just about food.

One of the things I love most about fall is that the weather makes it much easier to spend time outside with kids.

Go for Fall Walks

I think fall walks are elite.

The temperatures are cooler, the humidity is lower, and the bugs have usually calmed down.

As a homeschooling family, I love the idea of incorporating a short walk into our school-day rhythm.

Even something as simple as walking around the block before starting school can give everyone a chance to get outside and move.

And if you can get out for a walk by yourself, even better.

Go Hiking as a Family

Fall is usually our biggest hiking season.

The cooler weather makes hiking much more enjoyable, and there is something special about walking through the trees as the leaves change.

Sometimes we’ll hike and then finish by running up and down a big hill.

Other times, we’ll make hiking a Friday evening family activity instead of having a family movie night.

It’s a simple way to combine movement, family time, and being outdoors.

Go Apple Picking

Apple picking is another favorite fall family activity.

It’s a great way to spend time outside together, and then you get to bring home apples that can become part of your healthy fall meal ideas for the week.

Homemade applesauce and apple crisp are two simple ways to use the apples once you get home.

Visit a Marian Shrine

Another fall activity our family enjoys is visiting a Marian shrine.

We love visiting Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, where there are steps leading up to a large statue of Mary as well as many statues of the saints.

Because you’re outside and walking around quite a bit, it’s an activity that can be much more enjoyable on a cool fall day than during the heat and humidity of summer.

I love that an outing like this can combine faith, family time, movement, and the outdoors.

Have a Fall Bonfire

Bonfires are another activity that I think works particularly well in the fall.

With young children, summer bonfires can be tricky because it doesn’t get dark until quite late.

Fall solves that problem.

You can enjoy a fire under the stars without keeping little ones awake until 10 or 11 at night. There’s also something especially cozy about sitting around a fire when the weather is cool.

Make Fall Family Traditions Simple

I think one of the most beautiful things about fall is that you don’t need to create an elaborate bucket list to make the season special.

A family tradition can be incredibly simple.

Maybe it’s:

These simple traditions are often the things our children remember.

Enjoy the Season You’re In

One of the things I love most about fall is the feeling of transition.

It’s a natural time to settle back into routines after summer, but that doesn’t mean we need to fill every minute with activities and responsibilities.

There is something beautiful about enjoying the simple things:

A walk around the neighborhood.

A homemade meal.

A loaf of sourdough bread.

A hike through the changing leaves.

A family football game.

A bonfire.

A visit to a shrine.

A bowl of soup around the dinner table.

These little things can become the traditions our children remember.

As Catholic moms, we have the opportunity to approach these ordinary moments with gratitude and to use them as opportunities to love and serve our families well.

We don’t need to make every season complicated.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is simply embrace the season we’re in.
